The National Bank of Austria is perhaps the oldest bank of its kind in Europe. It was founded on the basis of the Austro-Hungarian National Bank, established in 1816. At this time, a unique numismatic collection began to gather.
The first building of the Central Bank of Austria was built in 1823 in the classical style. Since the days of the Austrian Habsburg Empire, it was planned to create the Austrian Palace of Money by combining the Bank, the trade and financial exchange and the trading center. Therefore, for almost 130 years, the building was constantly rebuilt, new rooms were added to it and floors were completed. The modern building of the National Bank of Austria was built in the 50s of the XX century.
