Palais Mollard, Herrengasse 9, Vienna, Austria
About the company:
The Globe Museum in Vienna is unique because it is the world’s only collection of globes on public display. The museum is located in the same building as the Austrian National Library, in the Clady Aldrigen Palace.
The collection of globes, which originally belonged to the named library, and laid the foundation for a specialized museum in 1956. In the museum you can see exhibits that performed not only the role of educational visual aids. Some globes belonged to Austrian emperors.
Individual copies were made specifically for important persons. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli once made two globes with portraits of Emperor Leopold I.
Among the most valuable exhibits of the museum are the earth globe of 1541 and the heavenly one of 1551. There is another specimen dating from 1536, the Gemma Frisius globe.
There are about 300 exhibits in the museum. Some were transferred here by private individuals for long-term storage.
