Museum of Funeral Equipment
Vienna, Austria (U1 metro to Sudtiroler Platz station)
About the company:
The Museum of Funeral Equipment (Bestattungsmuseum) could be called one of the strangest museums in Europe, if not especially revered in the capital of Austria “cult of the dead”. The attitude of the inhabitants of Vienna to the afterlife developed for many centuries, so this museum is considered natural and very popular.
Here you can get acquainted with the ancient traditions and culture of the funeral, since 1785, see about a thousand different exhibits related to this topic. For example, you can see objects ranging from a collection of bells that served to alert the buried alive to the uniforms of funeral workers, various models of coffins and dust urns from different times.
A unique exhibit is the death mask of Joseph Haydn himself, who invented reusable coffins. The very building of the museum is characterized by rigor and modesty, and the internal content blows a mournful solemnity, which makes every visitor to the museum think about the meaning of life.
