St. Paul's Church in Antwerp
Description:
Elegant Gothic temple with baroque interior, built in the XVI century on the busiest square of the city outskirts - the Animal Market. At the temple of St. Paul there is a collection of paintings describing fifteen mysteries of the life, death and glorification of Christ. Among them there is a copy of Rubens’s “Flagging” and Caravaggio’s “Madonna with rosaries”, as well as paintings by van Dyck and Jordaens.
At the side facade of the temple erected a bizarre sculptural group "Golgotha", consisting of 63 statues of saints, angels, prophets and patriarchs. This artificial hill is crowned with a crucifix. The grotto below symbolizes the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
Another attraction of the temple is an organ dating from the XVII century, which is considered one of the best in the country. Thanks to the excellent acoustics of the church, concerts of orchestras and choirs are held here.
