The Church of Our Lady on Sablon

Notre-Dame du Sablon, Brussels, Belgium

Description:

The Church of Our Lady on Sablon is located in an ancient area of Brussels, where in 1304 the first chapel in honor of the Holy Virgin Mary appeared, local crossbowmen raised money for its construction. According to legend, Beatrice Sotniks saw in a dream the Virgin, who told her to bring to the church a statue of the Madonna from the temple of Antwerp. The stolen statue immediately attracted interest, and a string of visitors reached for the modest church.

The popularity of the church among pilgrims made it possible to build a large Gothic temple instead of a small church. And the story told in the legend, found its embodiment on one of the walls of the church - there is a woman with a statue and a helmsman.

In addition, until 1784, respected persons from noble families were buried in the church.
