Church of Our Lady Chapelle

Church of Notre-Dame de la Chapelle, Place de la Chapelle, Brussels, Belgium

Description:

The Church of Our Lady Chapelle is one of the oldest churches in Brussels. The church is located near Grand Place Square. The first mention of the church dates back to 1134, when a chapel was built in its place as a gift to monks from the Duke. The chapel was completely independent of the city. The duke named the chapel “Capella of the Holy Virgin Mary”.

Over the years, the church has endured much. It was affected by destruction and fires, but the church was restored every time and gradually its style passed from Romanesque to Gothic.

In 1210 the chapel was rebuilt into a church. Most of the church's property was looted by the Calvinists in 1574. The church did not survive the bombing of Brussels in 1695. The church was restored only in 1708, it was in that year that Antoine Pastoran designed the bell tower, which has survived to this day.
