Church of St. James in Tournament
Eglise Saint-Jacques, Rue du Louvre, 7500 Tournai, Belgium
Description:
The Church of St. James in Tournai is one of the famous monuments of the city, located near the center. The approximate dates of the creation of the first church are 1153-1167. At that time it was built outside the fortress wall and many pilgrims visited it.
In the late XII - early XIII centuries, the frame of the building itself was built. The architects used arches, columns and vaulted windows. For cladding builders used a bar decorated with images of angels. There is also a square three-storey tower at the church. At the very top of the tower is a spire, which is surrounded by four turrets.
In 1368, the building was reconstructed, chapels decorated with frescoes depicting angels were added. The church contains a brass eagle cast in 1411 and a retablo of the XIX century.
Nowadays, the decoration of the church is mostly made in the neo-Gothic style. Restoration of stained glass windows of the XIX century began in 2010.
