Arcade Jubilee Park

Tunnel Cinquantenaire, Etterbeek, Brussels

Description:

The arcade of the Jubilee Park is a long curved colonnade adjacent to the Arc de Triomphe. The arcade is directly connected with the pavilions, which house the Art Museum, the Army Museum and the Automobile World Museum.

The construction of the monumental complex was timed to the fiftieth anniversary of the proclamation of Belgian independence. In honor of this event in the Jubilee Park, architect G. Bordieu planned to erect a triumphal arch that would emphasize the greatness of state power. It was the pavilions and arcade in the Jubilee Park that became the venue for the World Exhibition in 1880. The structure, influenced by French and Italian architectural traditions, symmetrically shapes the volume of the park and gives its lines completeness.

At the beginning of the XX century, the pavilions were rebuilt to increase the exhibition space. They are now occupied by major museums. The Arc de Triomphe and the Arcade connecting the arch with two pavilions have been preserved in their original form.
