Atomium sculpture

Square de l'Atomium, 1020 Brussels, Belgium

Description:

The Atomium sculpture is a symbol of Brussels, representing a huge brilliant model of the iron molecule, in a 165 billionth magnification, consisting of 9 huge spheres connected by transitions. The composition is located in the northern part of Brussels in front of the European Park.

Inside the monument, there are expositions telling about nuclear energy research, Belgian design, lifestyle of the 50s of the last century. In 20 seconds, the high-speed elevator rises to a height of 102 meters, from where a chic panorama of Brussels opens. In the Atomium you can visit a cafe and spend the night.

The atomium was erected specifically for the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. The giant model of the atomic structure of iron was a symbol of scientific and technological progress and peaceful use of atomic energy.

It was supposed to disassemble the Atomium after six months, but the design was so beloved by citizens and tourists and so successfully fit into the panorama of the city that it was decided not to touch.

In its original form, the monument existed until the end of the century. In 2006, the restored complex was reopened to the public. On this occasion, a special coin worth 2 euros was issued.

The complex is open all year round, without weekends. 6 areas are open to visit.
