Haasbek Castle

Kasteelstraat 40

Description:

Luxury medieval castle in the commune of Lennik southwest of Brussels. The castle is adjacent to a cascade of ponds, natural and parterre parks. It is one of the largest castles in Belgium, open to the public.

The history of the castle began in the XIII century, about 1236. It was built by Gottfried of Louvain to defend against neighbours from Hainaut and Flanders. Until the French Revolution, the castle remained the ancestral home of the counts of the Haasbeks. In 1388, the castle was completely destroyed by the locals - so they took revenge on its then owner, who had caused them something very annoying.

In 1889 the castle was completely restored in its modern form. At the beginning of the XX century Haasbek from private ownership passed into state ownership and became a museum. Today, objects of the XV-XVI centuries are stored here, and in one of the halls a unique bathroom with attributes of the second half of the XIX century is exhibited. The museum archive contains documents of the XIII-XVII centuries.
