Arenberg Castle
Kasteelpark Arenberg 1,3001 Leuven, Belgie
Description:
In the town of Heverle, near Leuven, Arenberg Castle is located, made in the late Gothic style. The view of this castle will not leave indifferent more than one tourist - its beauty and grandeur amaze and seem to be carried away in the time of counts, dukes and kings.
The castle is named after the dukes of von Arenberg, to whom it previously belonged. It is now owned by the Catholic University of Leuven. Since the XI century, the territory of the castle was in the power of the lords of Heverle, they then built the very first castle here. The fifteenth century brought ruin to the family and forced them to sell their property to the Picardians of Croix. Guillaume de Croix rebuilt Arenberg and even founded a Celestine monastery on the site, which now serves as a university library. Guillaume’s son, Prince of Porsian, destroyed all buildings reminiscent of ancient times in 1515 and turned the castle into a more modern building.
Since 1921, the castle belongs to the Catholic University of Leuven. This is a monumental building made in noble brown tones. Its two towers have pointed roofs. In the middle, you can see a large balcony on which high-ranking dukes once loved to breathe fresh Belgian air. The architecture is so rich that kings could live in the castle.
