In 1903, when Sofia University was the only higher educational institution in Bulgaria, the Academic Council of the SU decided to declare December 20.11.1903 the eighth patron holiday of the university.

St. Clement Ohrid

According to the church calendar, it was then that the day of St. Clement of Ohrid was celebrated.

Clement of Ohrid was one of the five disciples of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius who survived in Bulgaria. In the city of Ohrid (now within the Republic of Macedonia), he founded at the end of the 9th century at the Ohrid Monastery a large cultural and educational school, the purpose of which was to educate and educate the new cultural elite of Bulgaria.

Clement Ohridsky is a worthy heir to the great work of the authors of the ancient Slavonic letter. He reformed the Glagolitics of Cyril and Methodius, bringing the graphics of the letters of the new letter as close as possible to the graphics of Greek letters. In Ohrid, soon all church and liturgical books were translated into Old Slavonic (Old Bulgarian), which were sent to all parts of Bulgaria. Thanks to the acquisition of its new written language, the first Slavic state in Europe celebrated its Golden Age.

After 1944, the celebration of the student holiday was moved to November 17 (World Student Youth Day). But in 1962, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Sofia University, the holiday was returned to the old date.

On this day, higher education institutions throughout the country are closed, and students celebrate their holiday in noisy companies.
