International Museum Day

Description:

Historical Museum in Kyustendil

There are many museums in Bulgaria. This is understandable - in a country with a 13-century history, each stone contains traces of the past.

In all Bulgarian cities, regardless of their size, you can visit local historical museums and get acquainted with the history of the region. These museums contain sometimes rare unique monuments of antiquity - coins, tools, utensils, old books, clothes, furniture, characteristic of these lands at different times.

There are even open-air museums like the Etara ethnographic museum near Gabrovo, where visitors get acquainted with the work of various artisanal workshops of the 18th-19th centuries and can even purchase products and goods of traditional Bulgarian folk crafts: minted copper, clothes with national patterns, colorful pots and jugs, eat antique dishes.

There are even whole villages and towns turned into museums. These are the villages of Bozhentsi and Arbanasi in Northern Bulgaria, the city of Tryavna in the Stara Planina mountains and the old Nessebar near the Black Sea coast. The richest collection of exhibits, however, is in the National Historical Museum in Sofia, which is located in the foothills of Vitoshi in the town of Boyana.

Bulgaria also has many fine art museums. These are galleries where you can see the works of venerable masters or, as in the Gallery of Foreign Fine Arts in Sofia, you can enjoy the works of artists from all over the world.

Recently, the country began to celebrate the International Museum Day. For several years in a row throughout the country on May 18, museums have an extended working day - they do not close their gates at all for the night, and a string of visitors pass around the clock through their halls. In the squares in front of the museums, various performances and photo demonstrations are arranged, concerts of famous performers are held on the stage.
