Petrovden
Description:
In Bulgaria, folk customs associated with this holiday are still preserved. Since on this day the two-week fast ends, early in the morning the hostess of the house goes to the henhouse and chooses the so-called "Peter chicken", which is sacrificed to the saints. The dish of this chicken, as well as several early ripe apples ("petrovok", as they are called in Bulgaria), she takes to the church for consecration.
According to popular beliefs, Peter is considered to be the keykeeper of Paradise - he guards the Garden of Eden. And his older brother Paul controls thunder and sends hail to earth. It can cause fires and floods.
On this day, their namesake celebrate Peter, Paul, Kamen, Pavlina and Polina.
The next day, June 30, celebrates the feast of the other holy apostles.
