Bachkovo monastery

Description:

The Bachkov Monastery of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin is one of the oldest in Europe and the second largest in Bulgaria. For many centuries, skilled architects and artists created carved iconostases and frescoes, perfected the humble beauty of the monastery and restored it after the attack of the Turkish conquerors. The restoration work was completed, and the dispute over the ownership of the monastery between the Greeks and Bulgarians ended with the transfer of the holy monastery of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Today, on the territory of the Bachkovo Monastery there is a museum, which contains church utensils for household and ritual purposes, as well as old books, icons, crosses, the sword of Friedrich Barbarossa and frescoes of the famous Renaissance artist Zacharias Zograf.
