Sokol monastery
Kvartal Voditsi 60, Gabrovo, Bulgaria
Description:
The Monastery of the Assumption of Our Lady (popularly Sokolsky) is located 15 km from Gabrovo, near the Sokolova cave. The monastery was founded in 1832-1833, and the church in the rock on its territory was consecrated in 1834. The complex was built on donations from residents of neighboring cities and villages. Until 1959, it was a monastery for men, and now it is a convent for women. From 1836 to the present time there is a theological school at the monastery.
The architectural “highlight” of the monastery is a combination of interior bright paintings and carvings with the emphasized rigor of external forms.
In the center of the monastery there is a round fountain with tubes in the form of falcon heads for draining water. To drink from it, a scoop created in the Middle Ages is used.
Recently, the monastery complex has been restored and now special rooms can be provided for numerous pilgrims.
