The Monastery of St. George the Victorious
Description:
The Monastery of St. George the Victorious is located 17 km from the village of Glozhen, because it is also called the monastery of Glozhen. The Holy Monastery rises on top of the Teteven Mountains rock. The first monastery was built in the 13th century by the Kiev prince Glozh, who received local territories as a gift from the Bulgarian king. In the 18th century, monks rebuilt the monastery on a higher site to preserve it from the Turks.
The built monastery church was twice destroyed by an earthquake, the church seen by visitors today was erected in 1931. It presents a carved iconostasis preserved from the first church, in which, according to legend, there is an icon brought by Prince Glozh from the Kiev-Pechora Lavra.
Since 2006, the Monastery of St. George the Victorious has been declared a monument of history and architecture.
