Old town of Nessebar
Description:
Nessebar is one of the oldest European cities and the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria, founded more than 2000 years ago. Despite numerous hotels and tourist complexes, Old Nessebar, located on a small peninsula, still remains exquisitely ancient and romantic.
From the beginning of the first millennium BC there was a Thracian settlement here, later turned into a Greek colony. From ancient times to the present day in Old Nessebar preserved ruins of the fortress wall, towers, gates, reliefs, remains of Byzantine baths. The land here holds many secrets, so excavations are still ongoing.
At the end of the first century in Nessebar, the first Christian great-martyr, Saint Irene of Macedon, died.
The cultural and economic flourishing of Nessebar occurred in the XIII-XIV centuries, but in 1452 Nessebar fell under the pressure of the Turks. From the times of the Ottoman yoke, the old fountain and Turkish baths have been preserved.
In 1956, Nessebar was declared a museum city, and in 1983 the Old Town was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Among the attractions that need to be seen in Nessebar, the Church of Christ Pantocrator, St. John the Baptist, St. Sophia, etc., the monument to St. Nicholas, as well as the western fortress wall with gates. In addition to architectural beauties, Nessebar is rightfully proud of beautiful sandy beaches, cozy cafes and restaurants, and very close to the city is one of the most famous resorts in Bulgaria - Sunny Beach.
