basarbovo

Description:

The Rock Monastery of St. Dmitry Basarbovsky, the first mention of which dates back to 1431, is the only active male rock monastery in Bulgaria and has a high architectural, cultural and religious significance.

It is named after its most famous abode - St. Dmitry, who was born in the village in 1685 and spent his whole life in the monastery. Walking around this place, you can see a well excavated by a monk. According to folk beliefs, the water in it is healing. At the foot of the monastery are excavated more than half a century ago three rooms, one of which is a dining room.

Going further, you can climb 48 stone steps and see the niche where St. Dmitry slept, as well as a rock church with a beautiful iconostasis and an icon depicting the saint in full growth. On the territory of the monastery there is a cave, which houses a museum exposition and stores the relics of the monk Chrysant, who revived this monastery in 1937.
