Shumen Fortress

georgi S. Rakowski street 115 9700 Shumen, Bulgaria 341 mC

Description:

Shumen Fortress is located near the Bulgarian town of the same name. This is an archaeological monument of several epochs: the ancient Romans laid the fortress, although the first human settlements appeared here long before them. The Romans were replaced by the Byzantines, who rebuilt and expanded the fortifications.

What can now be seen on the site of the ancient fortress resembles the ancient monuments of Rome and Athens, framed by massive walls of medieval castles. The archaeological museum-reserve is open to tourists.

In the modern city, you should pay attention to the old city market of the XVI century, turned into an exclusive restaurant, and a unique clock tower.
