Madar horseman

Near the village of Madara - in the area of the city of Shumen

Description:

The Madar Horseman is a unique stone bas-relief depicting a warrior with a dog, defeating a lion. The composition is carved in natural height in a sheer rock in a cliff near the village of Madara. The monument was discovered in 1872 by Hungarian archaeologist Felix Kanitz. Some scientists suggest that the image of the rider depicts the Bulgarian Khan Tervel, who was the son of the famous ruler of Bulgaria Khan Asparukh.

The Madar Horseman is in a sense a symbol of the country, its honor and courage. The work of ancient masters attracts a lot of tourists who admire not only the rider himself, but also the impressive nature of these places.

There is also a cave in which there was once a pagan sanctuary. Later in these places, among steep stones and streaming springs, Christian monks found shelter.

In 1979, the Madar Horseman was included in the list of cultural monuments of UNESCO.
