Boyar Church

8 km from Sofia, in the village of Boyana at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains

Description:

Boyana Church is one of the most perfect and fully preserved monuments of Eastern European medieval art. The church consists of three chapels.

The eastern part of the church is a small, cross-domed building built in the 10th century. At the beginning of the 13th century, the second two-storey part of the church was added to the already existing structure. By the way, the frescoes located in this part of the house of God are one of the most valuable medieval images. The third church was built only in the early 19th century. The last church does not shine with artistic luxury.

The Boyana Church received world fame thanks to unique wall paintings. Among them, the most ancient are the images of St. John of the Rila Wonderworker (Heavenly Patron of Bulgaria), St. Petka Tarnovskaya, the ctitors and owners of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom of Tsar Constantine-Asen of the Pacific and Queen John, Kaloyan and Desislava.
