Church of Light Petka Samardzhiysk

7 Tsar Kaloyan Street, near TSUM in the tunnel, Sofia, Bulgaria

Description:

The church with the funny name of Sveta Petka Samardzhiysk with all its appearance speaks of medieval origin. It is very small and almost in the ground. The time of its construction dates back to about the 11th century, the walls stand on an ancient Roman foundation.

The church is active, there are regular services.

A temple was built in honor of the Great Martyr Petka of Iconium. It was consecrated in honor of Saint Peter. The main value of the church is not too good, but the old frescoes of the 16th century are visible on the walls. According to some reports, Sveta Petka Samardzhiysk is the final resting place of the Bulgarian hero Vasil Levski. Many residents of Sofia support this semi-legend.

The location of the church is far from perfect. The tunnel under the central department store tightly clutches her in her arms, hiding all her ancient and noble features.
