Monument to the Soviet Army
Description:
The monument of the Soviet Army is a military memorial complex erected in memory of the liberation of Bulgaria from the fascist occupiers. The complex includes several sculptural compositions in honor of Soviet soldiers-liberators. On the main monument stands the figures of a soldier with a submachine gun and a Bulgarian peasant woman and a worker. The monument was erected in 1954.
Since 1993, attempts have been made to demolish the memorial complex under the influence of anti-Soviet sentiments, but so far they have proved untenable. In 2011, vandals repainted statues of soldiers into American comic book heroes.
During the celebration of May 9, veteran organizations of Bulgaria gather here. On the eve of the holiday, public organizations and Russian diplomats clean the monument of graffiti and Nazi symbols.
