Baba Vida Fortress
Description:
The fortress of Baba Vida is a fortress with a rich centuries-old history and the love of many tourists. The fortress was built in the second half of the tenth century on the site of a Roman fortification and for a long time served as the protection of the city of Vidin. The fortress more than once became an arena for fighting, held long sieges, and was rebuilt at the request of new owners.
The shape of the fortress changed even when its purpose changed. The church that existed in the courtyard was destroyed when in the 18th century the fortress was used as a warehouse for ammunition storage, as well as a prison.
Today Baba Vida is a national cultural monument under the protection of UNESCO. Theatrical performances are also regularly held on the territory of the inner courtyard of the fortress. The fortress is open to tourists all year round.
