Ladeira dos Romeiros, 84-142 - Monte Serrat, Salvador - BA, 40415-420, Brazil

Description:

Nosso Senhor do Bonfim is the most famous Catholic church in El Salvador. It was built in the XVIII century on a hill on the Itapagip peninsula.

The church was opened in 1754, and its towers were completed in 1772. The facade of the building is two-dimensional, located surrounded by two towers. The windows and upper part of the facade are decorated in Rococo style, and the lower part of the facade is covered with white Portuguese tiles in 1873. The wooden ceiling of the temple was painted in 1820 by the artist Franco Velasco.

Work on the interior of the church was completed in the XIX century. The neoclassical altar was probably built by sculptor Antonio Joaquim Dos Santos in 1814.

Every year, the temple hosts the Bonfim festival, which is considered one of the most important celebrations in El Salvador.
