Fort San Marcelo
Description:
Fort San Marcelo (Forte de São o Marcelo) is an example of a superbly protected fortress. It was built in the early 17th century on a small island in All Saints Bay to ensure the safety of El Salvador. On all sides, surrounded by water, a circular fortress and impregnable 4-meter walls with cannons were designed to better control the vessels entering the harbor. It is now the decoration of the city.
Fort San Marcelo is one of the best tourist places in El Salvador, a kind of pearl of the bay. From here there is a stunningly beautiful view of the city. Well preserved and maintained in impeccable condition, the fortress is still under the control of the military. Fort San Marcelo is an open-air museum that is undoubtedly worth a visit to get acquainted with the history of the state. Some exhibits – restored old ships and sailboats – are exhibited directly on the water, around the fortress.
