Fort Santo Antonio Alem do Karma

Praca Barao do Triunfo, s/n - Largo de Santo Antonio, El Salvador, Brazil | Sto Antonio

Description:

Fort Santo António Alem do Carmo was originally intended to protect the city, later it housed a fortified prison.

The fort was built in 1626 by architect Francisco Frias. In 1949, the fort was reconstructed - the facade of the building was updated and an additional part was built between the two former fortresses.

Since November 2007, the fort has been under new management and is now used for more “friendly” cultural, social and sporting purposes. In particular, holding courses and performances along with regular music concerts is a major source of income for the fort.
