São Paulo Cathedral

Praca da S, 242 - S, Sã o Paulo, 01001-001, Brazil

Description:

Catedral Metropolitana (Catedral de Se) is the main Catholic cathedral in São Paulo. It is one of the largest neo-Gothic structures in the world.

It is known that the cathedral began its history in 1589, but at that time it was only a small church in the village of São Paulo. In the following years, the temple experienced a time of reconstruction, which lasted until 1616. In 1745, the church was destroyed, and instead a temple was erected, which stood until 1911.

From 1913 to 1967 there was a reconstruction of the temple and the construction of the Catedral de Se, which tourists and locals can see and visit today. The neo-Gothic style was chosen by Emil Nehl, the German architect who led the project. Now the Cathedral of São Paulo is a large religious building, whose height is 111 meters and width is 46 meters.
