The monastery of São Bento is the most important historical place in São Paulo. To date, the monastery is operating, services and confessions are held daily in it. It was founded on July 14, 1598.
The monastery is owned by Don Abbot Mathias Braga, who in 2007 received Pope Benedict XVI, the first to visit Brazil. A year earlier, the monastery building was restored and expanded in connection with the visit of the Pope.
The monastery building was built in neo-Romanesque style by architect Richard Burndle in 1922. Now the monastery has a college of St. Benedict, where you can take free language courses and courses in philosophy. Also in the monastery is a library with more than 100,000 titles, which is considered one of the oldest in the city.
