São Bento Monastery in São Paulo

Avenida Prestes Maia, 220 - Santa Efigenia, Sã o Paulo, 01031-001, Brasil

Description:

The monastery of São Bento was built in 1598 and is the oldest structure in São Paulo. The monastery is considered a cultural and historical heritage of the city and the state of São Paulo.

The idea of the foundation of the structure belongs to the monk Frey Maur Teixeira, who built a small chapel in honor of St. Bent. For a short time, Mauru Teixeira lived in the church and watched it alone. Two years later, a temple was erected on the site of the chapel, decorated with images of the saint on the facade.

1900 - the beginning of a new period in the life of the monastery: at the monastery was organized the College Col gio de Sã o Bento, opened the first philosophical university in Brazil and founded the first Benedictine abbey in Latin America.

The Monastery of Saint Bento is open daily. Every Sunday from 10 a.m., Masses are held in San Bento, accompanied by Gregorian singing.
