Monument to Independence
Description:
The Independence Monument is a monument symbolizing the independence of Brazil. It is a set of sculptures made of bronze and granite.
It is located on the banks of the Ipiranga, more precisely, on the historical site where Don Pedro I declared independence of the country on September 7, 1822.
The monument was conceived and executed by Italian sculptor Ettore Jimenez on the occasion of the centenary of Independence and was unveiled in 1922 not fully finished. They finished it only four years later.
The monument is part of the city's Independence Park, which also has a monument building erected in 1890, which now houses the Paulista Museum and the Creek House. The Imperial Chapel was built in 1952 to bury the remains of Don Pedro 1 and his first wife, Leopoldina Habsburg.
