R. do Col gio, 106-264 - Praia de Sã o Vicente, Sã o Vicente - Sã o Paulo, 11310-210, Brazil
Description:
The monument to Jose de Anchite was erected in Sau Vicente, a lively city in the state of São Paulo. Anchita was born on March 19, 1534, and was a Jesuit missionary recognized as the founder of Brazilian literature.
The sculptors were able to achieve a complete resemblance to Jose di Anchita and revealed in the monument the essence of his character. To this day, this poet and writer is considered one of the most important figures in the culture and history of colonial Brazil. The creation of the sculpture helped draw even more attention to the man who was the creator of the first grammar of the Tupi language and a participant in the formation of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Jose di Anchita has done much for the state of São Paulo, so the place where the monument was erected in his honor is not surprising. In Brazil, since 1965, June 9 is celebrated Anshieta Day, which is considered a national holiday. On this day, admirers of the missionary gather at the monument and put flowers at their feet.
