Sao Paulo Cathedral
Se Square, Sao Paulo, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Description:
Sao Paulo Cathedral is one of the highest cathedrals of the Roman Catholic Church of the XVI century, which is currently headed by His Eminence Cardinal Odilio Pedro Scherer.
The cathedral can accommodate 8,000 people. Its height is 111 and width is 49 meters. Two side towers are 92 meters high. This neo-Gothic building was built by the German architect Maximilian Emil Gel.
The history of the cathedral began in 1589, when it was decided to build a church in the small village of Sao Paulo. The church was built on the site of the modern cathedral in 1616. In 1745 it was demolished and a new one was erected in the Baroque style. The church stood until the construction of the modern cathedral began in 1913. Work on the construction of the building was carried out under the leadership of the first archbishop of the city - Duarte Leopoldo e Silva and ended only forty years later. In 1954, the organ was installed here by masters from Italy.
In the early 2000s, the cathedral underwent reconstruction, using 800 tons of rare marble.
