Morumbi Stadium

Praca Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, 1, Sao Paulo, 05653-070, Brasil

Description:

Morumbi is a legendary stadium in São Paulo, also one of the largest football arenas in all of Brazil. The stadium opened in 1960 and in its half-century history hosted a huge number of matches of various levels.

Construction of the Morumbi began in 1953 and lasted seven years. The stadium was designed by the famous architect Juan-Baptista Vilanova Artigas. Morumbi originally had a capacity of 70,000, but after reconstruction in 1970 this figure was doubled to 140,000. However, more recently, due to the introduction of new safety standards, the capacity of the arena has been greatly reduced, and today up to 80,000 fans can watch matches at Morumbi Stadium at the same time.

In 2014, this venerable arena will host the opening match of the World Cup, and now the stadium is once again being rebuilt to provide its spectators with the most comfortable conditions possible.
