The immigrant house museum
R. Dr. Almeida Lima, 754-880 - Brás, Sã o Paulo, 03164-000, Brazil
About the company:
The immigrant house-museum, built in 1887, is a former immigrant hostel and tells the story of immigration to São Paulo. It is located near the Anhembi Morumbi Theatre.
The origin of this house is primarily due to the immigration of Italian workers and their families in the nineteenth century. Here, newcomers could stay for up to eight days before being accepted for a new job and residence in Brazil. The last immigrants were settled in a hostel in 1978.
The museum has a permanent collection of antique furniture, documents and photographs, as well as regular temporary exhibitions related to immigration. In one of the rooms, resembling the deck of a ship, you can see the route of immigrants, as well as see life-size sculptures made by artist Susie Heler, representing immigrants from more than 20 countries.
