Thimphu

Tango Monastery

Dechenchholing-Dodena Lam, Thimphu, Bhutan

Description:

Tango Buddhist Monastery is located 14 km north of the town of Thimphu, near Mount Chery. It was built in the XIII century by the religious figure Lama Gyalva, but it acquired its current appearance in 1688 thanks to the ruler Tenzin Rabgye. The temple received its name in honor of the deity Hayagriva, who has the head of a horse. Tango Monastery is built in the Dzong style and has its characteristic curved walls and a beautiful tower with recesses.

Its territory covers caves, where meditations have been held since the beginning of the XII century. Near the temple are prayer wheels made of slates. Inside the courtyard there is a gallery illustrating the life and activities of national hero Drukpa Kagyu. On the first floor of the Tango Monastery there is a Buddha statue made of gold and copper. Its height is almost three times the height of an adult. The sculpture was made by the famous architect Panchen Nepa.
