Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalena

Czech Republic, Karlovy Vary, near Freedom Square

Description:

This Catholic church in honor of St. Mary Magdalena is one of the monuments of Baroque architecture in the Czech Republic. The extant church building was built in 1737 on the site of the burned-out Gothic cathedral of the XV century. The construction project was led by Prague architect Kylian Ignaz Dinzenhofer.

Visitors can see the altar with the amazing image of Mary Magdalene, created by Elias Dolphof, as well as two Gothic sculptures of the Madonna. The interior of the temple is distinguished by an amazing plaster design.

The main attraction for modern tourists and pilgrims has become an underground crypt or, in other words, a crypt. There is a funerary chapel with the altar of the Holy Sepulchre, made of pea stone and aragonite. Paintings depicting Calvary and the Garden of Gethsemane adorn the walls of the crypt. In addition, you can see the remains of the ancient cemetery, which once surrounded the cathedral until 1784. Interest from the historical and cultural point of view and geological exposition.
