Royal Palace

Prague Castle is a place where for many years the history of the Czech Republic was made, where the political life of the state was closely intertwined with the religious life. And the center of all events for a long time was the Old Royal Castle.

Since its foundation at the end of the IX century, the palace has constantly grown and changed. The original wooden building in 1135 was rebuilt into a stone Romanesque palace with a chapel. The following rulers built the palace in the Gothic style. At the junction of Gothic and Renaissance, a monumental Vladislav Hall with an unusual pointed vault was created. The room is huge - almost 1000 square meters, while there is no column holding the ceiling, which creates a sense of lightness and spaciousness.

In the Middle Ages, the hall witnessed great festivals and knightly tournaments. So that riders on horses could enter directly into the hall, a special staircase with long steps was built at a small angle. It is called the Horsemen's Staircase. Near the Vladislav Hall there is an office of zemstvo boards, the walls of which are picturesquely decorated with the clan coats of arms of officials. Part of the palace occupies the premises of the Old Parliament with a beautiful mesh vault. Today in the throne room of the Royal Palace held the election of the President of the Czech Republic.
