St. Vasily Ostrogsky Day
Description:
The fate of Vasily Ostrogsky was very difficult. He experienced all the hardships of earthly life, insults, condemnations, while, as a true Christian, he did not murmur at fate, but on the contrary, he believed even more, hoped, endured and loved, rejoiced in life, showing thereby the true path of a real person.
Vasily Ostrozhsky was born in the land of Hum, present-day Herzegovina, in the village of Mrkonich on Popov Field, on December 28, 1610 in the family of pious, pious Orthodox parents Peter Yovanovich and his wife Anastasia. At baptism, the parents called the child Stoyan, began to teach the fear of God and all good wisdom, went with him to holy church services, and later gave Stoyan to the monastery of Zavala, which was dedicated to the Introduction to the temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. This was done in order to protect the child from the anger of people and neighbors, which sharply began to manifest itself in relation to them, and at the insistence of the son himself.
Little Stoyan learns wisdom, useful secular sciences, reads the books of the Holy Fathers. Then he goes to the monastery of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, or Tvrdos, in the Trebin region, in which the center of the Trebin diocese was located. Here he fasts, prays, works, and soon becomes a monk under the name of Basil. And then he is awarded a deacon and priestly rank and begins to serve. After spending some more time in this monastery, he goes to the Cetinje Metropolitan of Mardarius and remains with him, having reached the archimandrite. Soon His Holiness Patriarch Paisios Janevets (1614-1647) learns about the active ascetic Basil and on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord in 1638 elevates him to bishops and makes him Metropolitan of Trebin with the center in the monastery of Tvrdos. And after some time, by the will of fate, St. Basil of Ostrog retired to the Ostrog monastery and will remain here until the end of his days (April 29, 1671). It was this day – May 12 in the new style – that later became the day of his memory in the Serbian Orthodox Church. St. John's Day. Vasily Ostrogsky can be safely put on a par with Christmas and Easter - so honor St. Basil Ostrogsky in Montenegro.
The power of his prayers was so great that people received miraculous healings through his miraculous prayers, the gift of vision that he received from God. And today, pilgrims from all corners of the earth, different religions and nationalities come to this Great Ostroga Wonderworker. At the kivot of the Holy One, prayers are said in many languages of the world. The sick are brought here, and the saint graciously heals them.
