Fortress cities of Old Bar and Ulcinja
Description:
Already in the 8-5 century BC people lived in the Bar field - the ancient Illyrians founded a powerful fortress. The Romans in the 4th century strengthened the building on impregnable vertical rocks, around which spacious olive groves spread. The fortress walls were completed by the Venetians (15-16 centuries), the Ottomans (17-18 centuries), until the Montenegrins blew up the city.
These places hide many legends and secret symbols. You will see miraculously preserved (partially) Citadel, temples with underground catacombs, rebuilt in mosques, ruins with ancient frescoes, princely chambers, amphitheatre, hamam, aqueduct and many more details of the ancient city.
And then you will sit down “on the kafu” or “chorbu” in a local cozy restaurant to immerse yourself in the national flavor and, inhaling this place, go to the very edge of Montenegro – to the border with Albania, in the city of Ulcinj.
It is said that it was in that old city that the author of the world-famous Don Quixote Cervantes was imprisoned and from there his Dulcinea appeared. On a high cliff right above the sea in ancient squares and in crooked streets, we will choose the most panoramic places and dine with local "specialties" (optional).
The rest of the time you can spend on the Ulcinsk Great Beach or drive to the island of Ada Boyana.
