Excursion to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro
Description:
An individual tour of the Bay of Kotor begins at 10 am, from Budva, or from the towns of the Budva Riviera (Becici, Rafailovichi, Milocer, St. Stefan). Duration of excursion: whole day
Boko Bay is a unique southern “fjord of the Adriatic”, surrounded by mountains, where the sea wedges into the land for 32 km. The bay consists of two reservoirs - external, with the towns of Tivat and Herceg Novi and an internal reservoir with the main towns of Risan and Kotor. The narrowest spot in the bay is connected by a ferry that cuts the road around the bay by almost an hour.
The first stop on our way from Budva to the bay is in the seaside town of Tivat, which is known for the international airport and marina for mega yachts “Porto Montenegro”. We park the car and visit this unique complex, with residential houses, boutiques, cafes and restaurants on the sea shore. Coffee break in the restaurant opposite the five-star Hotel Regent, overlooking the luxury yachts on the pier.
Near the town of Tivat, in the town of Lepetani, we cross by ferry with the car, to the other shore, to the town of Kamenari. The crossing takes about 10-15 minutes, and by ferry you can get out of the car and take unique photos of the bay from the ferry.
The road from the other side of the bay leads us through small places, to the city of flowers - Herceg Novi. Herceg Novi, located on the slope of the mountain, is immersed in greenery and plants, of which there are more than 500, the most common of which are palm trees, magnolias, agaves, cypresses, pines, oleanders, acacia...
Walk through the old part of the city, and access to the observation deck, from where you can see the entrance from the open sea to the bay.
Traveling along the bay, we visit the Orthodox monastery Savina, and its two Assumption churches, which are located in a beautiful park, surrounded by coniferous trees. In the Great Church is kept the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Savinskaya. In 1806, the legendary admiral of the Russian fleet, Senyavin, with the commander-in-chief of the Montenegrin land forces, in this monastery decided on joint actions for the liberation of Montenegro from the troops of Napoleon.
On the way, we stop and dine in a beautiful restaurant on the Montenegrin coast, called “Chatovic’s Mill”. It is famous for its exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and unforgettable gardens with small paths and bridges surrounded by mountains and the sea.
After lunch, visit the glorious town of sailors and captains - Perast, with its stone palaces and churches in the Baroque style at the foot of the hill. The population of this cozy town today is only 280 permanent residents, and in its heyday, lived more than 2000 people. On the embankment, we transfer to a cozy boat and visit one of the two islets of the bay, which are opposite Perast. Artificial island in the sea, with an area of 30 acres, “The Virgin of the Sea Reef”, is very popular among visitors. On the island there is a Catholic church and its museum part, which we will visit.
After a photo pause, get back in the car and drive to the Old Town of Kotor, which is surrounded by a fortress wall. Walk through the cobbled streets and squares inside the walls of the Old Town, to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon from the 12th century, which is the Heavenly Patron of the city. The city itself was under Roman rule from the 3rd century BC, and after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD, was Byzantine. Historically, the rulers changed, most of all Kotor was under the administration of the Venetian Republic (from 1420 to 1797), which most affected the architecture of the city. Included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
