Kom Monastery, Skadar Lake, Rijeka Crnojevic
Description:
We leave Budva, Becici, Rafailovichi towards Skadar Lake.
Then come the town of Rijeka Crnojevic, from here we go by boat to the island on which the Monastery is located.
More than a thousand years ago, the Slavs, the ancestors of modern Montenegrins, chose the land near Skadar Lake for settlements. The cultural heritage of the first Slavic states of Dukl and then Zeta is sacredly venerated by the Montenegrin people. Along the coast of Lake Skadar and on its rocky islands there are numerous Orthodox monasteries and churches. Monasteries were built on almost every one of the many lake islands in the Middle Ages, hence another name – Zetsky Athos.
We will visit the cradle of Montenegrin statehood – the medieval Kom monastery on Lake Skadar and the town of Rijeka Crnojevic on the banks of the picturesque Obod River.
Kom Monastery is located on a rocky island in the middle of the famous Skadar Lake. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, it is assumed that it was built in the period from 1415 to 1427. For some time there was the location of the Zeta Metropolia. Our way to it will pass through the picturesque Obod River and the Skadar Lake National Natural Park.
