Budva

Budva's Old Town

Stari grad, Budva, Montenegro

Description:

The city of Budva was created by the Phoenicians. Caught for unknown sins from his native lands, Kadmos and his wife Harmonia, according to legend, became the founders of the emirion Butua (Budva), and from here begins a long life and the difficult fate of the city. The rulers of the city changed – Greeks, Venetians, Slavs ruled it – and they all left their unique mark on the culture of this unique place.

The city is literally filled with monuments of culture, mainly, of course, religious culture. Churches of the Holy Trinity, St. John, the Holy Virgin and St. Sava, the monasteries of Stanjevici and Podostrog... It would seem that the old city should be a place solemnly strict. But summer comes, and in the streets and squares the magic happens. They turn into stage, where visiting troupes give performances, the city is filled with music - music festivals are held here, and in the magnificent interior of the Church of Santa Marina de Punte, classics sound. And the main square turns into the square of poets.

In the ancient Citadel, located at the highest point of old Budva, the Grand Theatre Festival is held. But if you are not a lover of classics and poems, just walk along these pavements, sharpened between the stone walls, you will be surprised to see suddenly on one of them the familiar profile of Pushkin - so called one of the many cafes of the old city. There are many such small cafes in the city, as well as boutiques and various galleries.
