Cetin monastery
Description:
One of the greatest Orthodox shrines of Montenegro is the Cetinsky Monastery, a symbol of the freedom-loving spirit of Montenegro, the heart and cradle of the Orthodox state. Here for 500 years is the residence of the Metropolitans of Montenegro. The role of Russia in the prosperity of this monastery can be judged by the words of St. Peter Cetinsky: “The land of bones of one who does not love Russia will not accept.”
Almost half of the treasury of the Cetin monastery consists of the gifts of Russian tsars and queens. In the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God - the heart of the Cetinsk monastery - the relics of St. Peter of Cetinsky are kept, the incorruptible right hand of St. John the Forerunner, once belonging to the Romanov family and transferred by the mother of Nicholas II to the Montenegrin metropolis. The shroud embroidered with gold is also a gift of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great to the Metropolitan and Vladyka of Montenegro St. Peter of Cetinsky.
The monastery has a museum, which presents the vestments of the Metropolitans of Montenegro, the crown of St. Stephen Dechansky, rare manuscripts and printed books of the 13th-19th centuries, church utensils and ancient banners.
