Description:

In 1980, UNESCO declared the Durmitor Park and the Tara River Canyon a “World Heritage of Humanity”. It is 390 sq km of unique natural beauty, and a special decoration of the park is the canyon of the Tara River, whose height is 1300 m and length is 82 km.

Its size is second only to the Grand Canyon in the United States, and in beauty, perhaps, and surpasses the American. The name of the river comes from the ancient Illyrian tribe "autariat", which lived in these parts in the IV - V centuries AD. Almost throughout its length Tara is replete with rolls and whirlpools and only closer to the place of confluence with Beer, its current becomes calm and leisurely, allowing you to consider the pebble bottom, clean and smooth, completely devoid of vegetation. The way of the river lies between high amazingly picturesque rocks in the growths of amazing mosses, with falling down in many waterfalls. In summer, the water in the river is pure malachite color, and its temperature rarely rises above 12 - 15 'C. Tara is the largest container of drinking water in Europe that does not require cleaning.

The main architectural and historical landmark of the canyon is the famous, as if hanging in the air, bridge in the town of Djurdjevic Tara, built in 1937 and former at one time the only thread connecting the north and south of Montenegro. The bridge is thrown over the canyon at an altitude of 150 m and has five arches with a total length of 370 m. The expanses of the canyon are everywhere rugged with bizarre caves and karst recesses, and many of them are still waiting for their discoverers.
