Tara River
Description:
Tara is a river in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is formed at the confluence of the rivers Opasnica and Verusha, flows 144 km north through the territory of Montenegro, then - Bosnia and Herzegovina, where, merging with the river Piva, forms the river Drina. On the river in its upper reaches is the city of Mojkovac.
In the middle course of Tara forms the deepest canyon in Europe (length 82 km, depth up to 1,300 m). The canyon is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Durmitor National Park. The river is crossed by the majestic Djurdjevic Bridge. This bridge became the hallmark of the region, and was filmed in the military action movie “Hurricane with Navarone”. Tara rafting is one of the most popular types of tourism in Montenegro.
The governments of Bosnia and Montenegro planned to flood the Tara River canyon by building a hydroelectric power station on the Drina River. However, in April 2005, these plans were rejected after successful protests by supporters of the canyon preservation. But in September 2006, despite all efforts to protect the canyon, an agreement was signed between the Slovenian company Petrol and the Montenegrin company Montenegro-bonus to build a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 40-60 MW.
