Description:

Forte Mare, which means Sea Fortress, rises on the rocks in the old part of the flowering city of Herceg Novi. It is part of the ancient fortifications that protected the city in the Middle Ages. The appearance of the fortress presumably dates back to the 14th century. In the period up to the 17th century, the fortress was reconstructed and expanded several times.

The current appearance and size of the fortress has since the time of Ottoman rule, when its walls grew teeth, and in the fortress appeared guns. At that time, the fortress bore the name “Yaka Kula”, which means “powerful fortress” or “Kula Abaspashe”. The current name Morska Kula (Sea Tower) was given to the fortress in the 18th century by the Venetians. The fortress owes its modern appearance to the Austrians, who somewhat modified it.

In the fortress there were many secret passages, manholes and stairs. In 1833 the fort was reconstructed, and in 1952 the fortress was used as a summer cinema. Later in its walls began to hold discos and concerts.

At the end of the 20th century, the fortress again underwent restoration, and now Fort Mare is a famous tourist site. Through the gate in its walls you can walk directly from the sea shore to the top of the fortress, and if you climb to the upper floors of the fort, then your eyes will have a breathtaking view of the city and the sea.
