Moraca Monastery
Description:
Moraca Monastery is located in the central part of Montenegro in the valley of the Moraca River. He is the representative of the most important Orthodox Serbian monuments of the Middle Ages, located in the Balkans.
The complex of the monastery consists of a large church of the cathedral, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God, as well as a small church of St. Nicholas along with several buildings and monastic cells.
The monastery was founded in 1252 by Stefan, the son of the Grand Duke of Serbia Vukan II. After the raids of the Turks in the XV century, the monastery was ruined and destroyed, and restored only at the end of the XVI century. Eleven scenes showing the life of the prophet Elijah, as well as frescoes with the faces of the Virgin and Christ have been preserved here to this day. On a special account here are the icons of St. Sava and St. Simeon.
The architecture of the monastery is dominated by the style of the Rash school: a one-nave structure made of stone, the external features of which are made in the Romanesque style. The simplicity of its exterior contrasts with the chic interior decoration - icons and frescoes, which are among the best representatives of Byzantine and Serbian wall painting.
