Cathedral of St. Tryphon

Ulica 2 (sjever-jug) Kotor, Montenegro 49m C

Description:

The Cathedral of St. Tryphon in Kotor is an important architectural monument with a rich history. Saint Tryphon, in whose honor the church was built, was the patron saint of the sailors of the Gulf of Kotor. Legend has it that, returning from a campaign to Asia Minor in 809, the sailors decided to take out his relics, but a storm prevented them from swimming out of the bay. Then the citizens decided to buy the remains of the saint from the sailors.

A temple was built specifically for the burial of relics. Today, the church belongs to the Catholic community, but the Orthodox are freely allowed to the second floor, where the relics are stored. In the temple, a huge number of antiquities are preserved, protected by the servants of the cathedral.
